Jack Nance grew up in Texas and started acting while at North Texas State University in the 60s'. He dropped out of school in order to devote himself to theater, eventually moving to San Francisco. There he landed the role of Tom Paine in the critically well-received play of the same name. After the play's tour, Nance moved to Los Angeles, appearing in various films and plays over the years, including Motorama, Johnny Dangerously, Meatballs 4, The Hot Spot, and Colors. Lynch fans will best remember him as Henry Spencer in Eraserhead, as well as Pete Martell in Twin Peaks, Nefud in Dune, Paul in Blue Velvet, 00 Spool in Wild At Heart and Phill in Lost Highway.

Jack Nance was found dead Monday, December 30, 1996 by a friend who stopped to check on him. The cause of death subdural hematoma caused by blunt-force trauma . L.A. County Deputy Mark Bailey said Nance was punched in the head during a fight on the previous Sunday with two men at a doughnut shop. "Sometimes people irritated Jack, so he'd be verbally abusive," Lynch told reporters. Lynch said Nance was in poor physical shape. "Jack always said he wouldn't be too hard to kill." The case of his death is still open.

The story of Jack Nance's life, and death, could have been lifted out of a David Lynch film. Robert Owen reports on a new documentary about the Twin Peaks actor.


The unsolved murder of an actor shrouded in mysterious circumstances; a chance meeting between two friends after 25 years; a first time director who only landed his job following a mistake by a temping agency; and just after the first cut of his documentary film, the master tapes are stolen and ransomed for $2,000.

These would be the perfect ingredients for one of David Lynch’s weirder movie outings, but truth turned out to be stranger than fiction with Chris Leavens’ documentary, I Don’t Know Jack (2001), which recently screened at the Leeds International Film Festival.

Late actor Jack Nance is probably best known for playing Pete Martell in Lynch’s TV series Twin Peaks, opening the show with the line "She’s dead - wrapped in plastic". But he is remembered not only for this appearance, but also for appearing in nearly every Lynch film, including the lead role of Henry in his 1977 cult debut Eraserhead.

In fact Nance’s 1996 death aged 53 was itself a mystery of Lynchian proportions. He was found dead from head injuries, caused by blunt force, at his South Pasadena apartment the day after being involved in a fight at Winchells donut shop opposite his home. Echoing the death of Laura Palmer, whose body was discovered by Pete Martell in Twin Peaks, those responsible for his murder have never been found.

Green, who played the magician in Lynch’s most recent offering Mulholland Drive, belonged to San Francisco theatre companies Circus and Theater of Marbles. Also involved with the two companies were Nance and his first wife Catherine Coulson - the mysterious log lady in Twin Peaks (!!!!). This was around the time of Eraserhead, and Green began to socialise with Lynch and the couple. But following Lynch’s movie debut, he didn’t see him again until Nance’s memorial service some 25 years later, and round about the time work began on I Don’t Know Jack, Lynch offered Green the Mulholland Drive part

Born in Boston of Boston/Irish stock on December 21, 1943, Marvin John ‘Jack’ Nance was raised in Dallas.

He made his acting debut at the Dallas Theater Center, and travelled the country performing in children’s theatre. Moving to Los Angeles he trained at the Pasadena Playhouse and in San Francisco spent eight years with the American Conservatory Theater. He also appeared in many radical and avant garde productions, including a number of Brecht plays, and took the lead role in the late 60s west coast hit Tom Paine. Early film roles included Fools in 1970, and Bushman.

In fact his starring role in Eraserhead nearly didn’t happen - initially he thought Lynch’s script was too strange, and it was only because he was impressed with the director’s short film, ‘The Grandmother’ that he agreed to do the film. He later went on to become a member of the Lynch ‘company’ appearing in six of his movies, the others being Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Lost Highway.

But tragedy struck with the 1991 suicide of his second wife, Kelly Jean Van Dyke-Nance, niece of Dick Van Dyke. Kelly, a secretary, suffered from alcohol and drugs abuse, having started on prescription drugs at the age of 13. Nance, discovering she had appeared in adult movies and was taking drugs, decided they should split, resulting in her hanging herself just six months into the marriage. According to his brother Richard, Nance never got over her death, his anguish being heightened by the knowledge a thunderstorm meant she had been unable to contact him on a film set, and he retreated to the bottle.

Drink for Nance was something of an old ‘friend’, having spent 10 years in an alcohol recovery group before apparently winning his battle by the end of the 1980s. He had been helped by fellow Blue Velvet actor Dennis Hopper, who flew him to an LA drug rehabilitation centre on the pretence he would be given pills to remove his thirst for alcohol! But following Kelly’s death he was back on the bottle, and during the making of the film Joyride was fired for being drunk on set. He also had other health problems, suffering from two minor strokes during the last 18 months of his life.

Langsam, wie es seine Art war, beugte er sich vor und flüsterte dem entführten Schuljungen ins Ohr: "We may all be killed", und lachte mit den anderen Gangstern, rauh, wie das Geräusch einer Säge. So lernte ich Jack Nance in Blue Velvet von David Lynch kennen. Wir trafen uns öfter während dieser Dreharbeiten und meine Bewunderung für diesen ungewöhnlichen Schauspieler wuchs. Er schien sich einen ganz anderen, unsichtbaren und intimeren Zugang zu den Rollen zu schaffen als zum Beispiel seine Kollegen Dennis Hopper oder Kyle MacLachlan. "Als ich jung war, war ich ein engagierter Schauspieler, stand endlos auf der Bühne in hunderten von Aufführungen und ein Freund, ein Autor, sagte zu mir: Jack, wenn du nach Hollywood gehst, ist es das Ende für dich als Künstler. Ich sagte: "Nein, sie warten auf mich!" Für ihn, Paul Foster, machte ich Eraserhead." So haben ihn viele kennengelernt, als Henry Spencer, der von Lynch in Eraserhead mit menschlichen Sehnsüchten auf eine seltsam unwirkliche Reise durch das Grauen der Seele geschickt wurde. Fortan sah man den Kopf von Jack Nance mit den elektrisierten Haaren auf Kinoplakaten zu Horrorfilmnächten oder auf Büchern zum Genre. Wie es häufig so geht, war es auch für Nance schwer, nach diesem Underground-Erfolg wieder Fuß zu fassen. Sein Hollywood wurde das der Nebenrollen. Ob in Wim Wenders`Hammett, in Barfly von Barbet Schroeder, oder auch in den Lynch-Filmen Dune, Wild at Heart, Fire Walk With Me und Blue Velvet: Er glänzte! Aber nur als kleiner Gangster. Gute Nebendarsteller können oft ehr als sie zeigen dürfen. Nachdem er den Teufel Alkohol besiegt hatte, wurde ihm sein vielleicht größter Erfolg zuteil: Er spielte die einzige positiv besetzte Rolle in Lynchs Fernsehserie Twin Peaks! Über ein Jahr lang konnte man seine bedächtige, rauhe, tiefe Baßstimme genießen, konnte sich jede Woche über die Angel- und Schachphilosophie des Pete Martell amüsieren, über seine Kunst, keinen Kaffee kochen zu können und mit einer hinterhältigen Ehefrau klarzukommen. Nance hatte sich aufgerappelt, er lebte zwischen Selbstkritik und Begeisterung für den Beruf; 1985 hatte er in einem Interview mit Peter Braatz und mir so eindrucksvoll Selbstkritik gezeigt, indem er mitten im Satz innehielt, schwieg und sich verabschiedete. Er sagte: "Kino ist eine Menge kindischer Unsinn für mich, kindisches Geschäft. Ich dachte über mich nach und kam zu dem Entschluß: Ich höre auf, ich mache Schluß - Ende ...aus...vorbei. Ich werde Verkäufer ...nein, ich könnte nie Verkäufer sein. Wißt ihr, zu schnell gerät man in eine Art Klasse, eine abgehobene Klasse. Fernsehen tut das, Kino auch ... ich weiß nicht..." Vielleicht war er wegen dieser Fähigkeit zweifeln zu können, Nebendarsteller geworden, der Fähigkeit, dem Glamour seines Berufes keinen Reiz abzugewinnen. Seine letzte Rolle spielte Jack Nance in Lost Higwhay (deutscher Start April 1997) unter der Regie seines Freundes David Lynch, mit dem er für die Finanzierung ihres ersten gemeinsamen Films Eraserhead noch Zeitungen austragen ging. In Lost Highway spielt er einen Automechaniker, als Nebendarsteller. 1986 widmete ich Nance einen Kurzspielfilm, der sich mit ihm und seiner Rolle als Henry in Eraserhead beschäftigte, Titel: The Neighbour. Das war er: ein Nachbar, ein Arbeiter, Beruf: Schauspieler. Zehn Jahre später verstarb Marvin John Nance 53jährig an den Folgen einer Schlägerei vor einem Doughnut-Geschäft.

Ich fand Jack immer klasse. Und sei es nur eine Szene, sie war stets wichtig und unvergesslich.

Ich finde auch die Konstanz gut, die sein Auftauchen ins Lynchs Filme gebracht hat.

Aber ich hätte nie gedacht, dass er noch so jung war, gerade mal 47 bei Twin Peaks.
Aber gut das geht mir bei Lynch genauso.

Das stimmt. Wobei "Barfly" an sich ja schon sehr gut ist!
